New Dwellings:
Approved Document Q is a Standard for the security of doors and windows in New Dwellings, which came into force in October 2015.
Document Q is part of Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations 2015 which details the standards required for Doors and Windows to resist physical attack by a Burglar.
Document Q applies only to New Dwellings and includes standards to ensure both doors and windows are of a sufficiently robust design, use appropriate hardware and make reasonable provision to resist unauthorised access to any New Dwelling from the ground floor, basement or within two metres of a flat surface (such as a flat roof or access balcony).
Doors and windows installed in these locations in New Dwellings must be compliant with the requirements of Document Q and classified as a SECURE DOOR SET or a SECURE WINDOW.
Extensions To An Exsisting Dwelling:
Document Q Standards are not applicable to the doors and windows in an extension to an existing dwelling.
Change Of Use Of A Dwelling:
If the Building or part of the building undergoes a “Material change of Use.”
“Material change of Use” could be scenarios like a conversion of a barn or garage into a dwelling or rooms, OR where the renovations to a property are so extensive Building Control could consider effectively it is a New Dwelling.
Document Q standards may be a requirement so seek advice from Planning and Building Control.
Replacement Doors And Windows Into An Existing Dwelling:
Document Q Standards are not applicable to any doors and windows being “replaced” in an existing dwelling.
