Top tips for customers to ensure a safe installation during COVID.

Following lockdown it is only natural that homeowners may be apprehensive about inviting tradespeople into their homes to carry out necessary installations. Here construction expert Hadyn Leon from StoneSeven shares his advice on making the installation process as safe and stress-free as possible during these unusual times. 

Firstly, it’s important to remember that this is a strange time for all of us. As much as customers may be nervous about having tradespeople in their home, fitters are equally cautious about entering into strangers’ properties. Therefore, mutual respect and general common sense will make the process easier for all involved.

The following small measures can make a huge difference to the ease of an installation:

1. Firstly, make sure the area around and leading up to the space where the doors will be fitted is clear from clutter­—both inside and out. This will reduce fitters having unnecessary contact with your belongings.

2. Moving obstacle out of the way prior to the installation will also reduce the length of time that fitters need to be on your property.

3. If the fitters need to pass through your home to access the area where doors will be installed it really helps if all connecting doors are left/wedged open to minimise contact with door handles.

4. Please don't worry about offering refreshments during these times. To minimise risk most fitters will bring their own food and drink.

5. Depending on the fitter/company they may or may not choose to wear a facemask while they are in your home. If this is something that is important to you please let them know beforehand so they can come prepared, or it may be worth providing PPE yourself just in case.

6. Remember that fitting doors is a technical job and, at times, two fitters may be required to work in close proximity. Obviously they will want to minimise any time spent in close contact so please allow them to work quickly and efficiently by limiting any unnecessary distractions.

7. Keeping a bottle of hand sanitiser easily accessible or ensuring that hand-washing facilities are available is much appreciated.

8. Although it is always advisable to keep children out of the way when having work done it is particularly important right now, especially if they don’t understand the need to social distance.

9. Finally, don't forget that fitters are aware of government guidelines and are likely to be as conscientious about social distancing and hand sanitising as you are. It’s in everyone’s interest to stay safe so please try not to worry!
